Contractors in Calgary Expect Surges of Renovation Projects Until 2014

After the massive floods that hit the cities of Calgary, Toronto, and other nearby areas last October, general contractors in Calgary and neighboring cities alike expect a massive surge of home renovation projects pushing well into 2014 – in anticipation of additional weather disturbances as the new year progresses. This renovation spending is almost expected just as the massive flooding last year boosted reconstruction activity in the area, as reported on Frances Dares’ website:

In fact, a report by Diana Petramala, economist at TD Economics, said the rebuilding efforts in Calgary and Toronto, following the damaging floods that struck in late June and July, are expected to lead a burst in renovation spending.

“In Toronto, July’s storm mostly led to a sea of flooded basements across the city. The storms in Calgary were far more catastrophic, with over 14,504 homes being damaged, many of which will need to be rebuilt completely,” said the report.

Insurance claims from the damages reached highs of $2 to $3 billion, according to the Insurance Bureau of Canada. The most common damages include flooded basements, leaking roofs, and destroyed building foundations. In order to help with the rehabilitation of residents, the Albertan government released an additional $1 billion in support of rebuilding efforts.

Homes and businesses in Calgary need to be ready for any disturbances or sudden shifts in the weather. Winter-time temperatures could drop as low as -2 degrees Celsius. In the summer, the thermometer registers a constant 30 degrees Celsius. Precipitation comes in both snowfall and rainfall, which can cause a significant amount of damage to an inadequately-reinforced home.

Calgary experiences over 320 mm of rainfall every year, with the most soaked days occurring in June and July (the months when the massive flooding occurred last year). Snowfall comes in at an average of over 126 mm.
